Richard 'Strummer9' Herbert's Blog

19th June

I do enjoy my monthly(ish) trips down south to London, a seemless journey via virgin rail, couple of tube trains and 3 hours after leaving home im sat in the badbeat offices in Knightsbridge. Played a few hours while in the office and it was a pretty standard day as far as this month goes which means i was swinging!!! Coming to the end of the session and pretty happy to be looking at breaking even  (after running AK into AA twice all in pre for 100BB and losing both then getting all in with AA v KK and losing level looked good) i had the horror of horror beats. I raise with QQ and get one caller. Flop is Q 7 2 rainbow and we are both 180BB stacked AND hes an over aggressive mup who has serious issues with me!!!!!! Dont get much better!!! Anyway some betting on the flop then the turn brings a 3..................................and all the money goes in !!!!! Happy days indeed 360BB on its way home to papa!!!! He turns over an obvious under set of 7s- then bang!!! The one out 7 on the river and im feeling rather ill. this was quickly followed by a f**king idiot call by a knob from some far flung land: on a board of J Q 2 rainbow he CALLS an all in of $400 ($360 in pot) with 8 f**king 8- he obviously realised i was bluffing and my AK was no match for his masterful reading skills COOOOOOOOOOCK!!!!!!!!!

Time to switch off- three buy ins down and ready to boil! Still i had a night out with the badbeat team to look forward to at the Loose Cannon poker room (Very nice indeed!). A nice meal, a few glasses of red, good company and a freindly game of poker with a GUKPT seat up for grabs for the winner. Unfortunetly poker was far from the winner with the drunkist, loudist and by far worst player winning the seat! This is not said in jest- this is fact! He managed to KO me in 5th place when i got him all in pre flop with K10 v Q4. At the time he was slight cheap leader and i was clear second in chips- after hitting QQxxx he sprang to his drunken feet and told me he spent the last 3 hours setting me for that, hed sucked me in!!! Thats right, he spent 3 hours playing mind games with me to get all his chips in with Q4 when 40%/60% dog!!!! What a player!!!!!!! Needless to say it wasnt the first and far from the worst of the beats dished out by our drunken freind But hey what can i do!!! Sometimes you just got to hold your hands up and admit I was out played. Over all though it was a great night with a great bunch off people (well the ones who can handle there drink-the other!!! Seriously give it up!).

I would just like to add that yes I got very lucky, I did try to mix up my game knowing I was playing against better players and that by rocking up I wouldnt stand a chance. My all-in reraise with Q 4 was just to try and get strummers raise, I did not want a call but got lucky. I do know that I can be a bit loud and exciteable after a couple of drinks, but thats the way I am, love t or hate it. I will do my best at The GUKPT event and hope I can surprise some people with a result......I wont be drinking.......but then Ill rock up......hmm maybe justa couple.

Hi, Andy here, reading the two blogs from Jon and Strummer show two sides of the Pro vs Amateur eternal battle ! on the one hand we have the Pro raising it up with garbage , getting the Am to fold and then showing the cards to rub it in, on the other side the Am just goes with the flow, gets lucky and gets abused.

You can't have it both ways, if you think about it - the buyin to a GUKPT should be well within the reach of a full time trader/mentor, surely a better comp would have been for the staff to play a comp with the trainees ?

If it is Luton you are playing in Meds - see you there - not sure I will get there via the leaderboard but I will be playing regardless !!!
